Volunteering for Oakland (VFO) supports, motivates and collaborates with community action groups formed by volunteers. In early 2009, a survey of our volunteers indicated a broad interest in local Education, Health Care and Environmental issues. With that input, VFO organized various projects addressing these local concerns. Additional community activities are being planned-we welcome your suggestions and involvement!
Education was the first issue we took on, starting with an education brain-storming session held in early 2009. This resulted in the formation of several action groups promoting volunteerism to target identified issues. Our current education projects are the Volunteer Fair and Dictionary Day.
Environment was our next focus. We formed Greening Oakland, dedicated to bringing together people, resources, and businesses to address climate change and our environment at the local level. GO organized Green Fairs and workshops to educate homeowners about residential energy and water conservation.
Healthcare was our third endeavor. VFO and affiliated organizations have been educating residents about the Affordable Care Act since its rollout in 2013. VFO organized Health Insurance Enrollment Events: we recruited Insurance Agents-and some of our members became Certified Educators-in order to enroll residents for health insurance under Covered California.
Voter Registration efforts are starting now. It is a nonpartisan effort to engage more citizens in the democratic process in this election year.
Volunteering for Oakland is not affiliated with any political party or organization. Our goal is simply to mobilize volunteers to engage in action for the betterment of our community.
